Life With Twins – 21 months

The 21st month marks the month of the viral plague. No, we weren’t sick the whole month, but someone was sick for almost 2.5 weeks of it. The sickness this winter can kiss my behind. I’ve thought about, cleaned up, listened to or talked about more disgusting bodily fluids than I care to EVER.

Gross/Fine Motor

I’m not going to lie to you – I have no idea what milestones they are supposed to hit at this age with regards to gross and fine motor skills. I can tell you that they’ve finally shown more of an interest in scribbling vs. eating the crayons/pens/whatever. Both, Miles especially, like to screw the top of the bubble container on and off, jump on the little trampoline pretty frequently and Abby started walking backwards the other day which was cute. Miles is able to walk down the stairs if I am holding his hand. Abby, not surprisingly, would rather be held. She will walk to and from the car/daycare more often, but she’s my wanderer so I tend to carry her more often than not. Otherwise I’m scurrying to get Miles out of his seat and she’s off playing in the grass 10 feet away. Not a big deal if its the grass, a big deal if she goes into the street instead. They both LOVE to go outside and down the slide. Actually, they are really just happy to go outside and walk around.

Speech/Language

Its becoming increasingly harder to track what they know. If I had just one kid maybe but with both I never remember. I know for sure they both know 2-3 body parts, possibly more. They know a few animals – mostly cat and dog and I think Miles knows lion. Abby knows monkey. They both know most common objects – I don’t know that they’d point to one if I asked but if I say go get your shoes/book/bubbles they know what I’m talking about. I know they understand jump, clap, up and down, possibly on and off (in other words, I say them a lot).

Word lists (again for my records, ignore if you don’t care – though I usually end up forgetting a few anyway)

Life with Twins – 20 months

Well friends, we are almost two and we are starting to ACT like it.

Here are just a few reasons why one has cried, particularly over the last week or two:

1. I gave Miles his bear and he didn’t want his bear

2. I gave Miles his cup and he didn’t want his cup

3. I turned off Pocoyo

4. Someone spotted a work paci and I hid it

5. I tried to put socks and shoes on and they.didn’t.want.socks.on.yet

6. I took the book over to Miles so he could see the page

7. Because THE PUZZLE PIECE ISN’T FITTING IN THE PUZZLE OH MY GOOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!

Okay, back to business.

Gross Motor

Not a ton new here. They both attempt to jump which is hilarious because they basically just go from flat footed to tip toes in a much faster manner. Every once in awhile we get ONE foot off the floor, but I don’t think either has managed both unless they are hanging onto the side of the crib for support. Miles gets a kick out of holding my hand and attempting (yes, attempting) to walk down the stairs, but his legs aren’t long enough yet so its rather amusing. Abby is throwing balls now and has started to pick up Miles’ habit of putting things away. No complaint here. Still no grand attempts to ride much on the riding toys – they get on and then get back off. Sometimes Miles will go backwards a few steps. And pedals? Not happening.

Fine Motor

Slowly we are getting better with spoons and forks – Miles is still better, or maybe he just cares more. Actually, just yesterday he got mad because he didn’t have a fork and bowl like I did. Both can put together shape peg puzzles pretty consistently but have some trouble with pieces that don’t have straight edges.

Speech/Language

They are better at following directions, though honestly half the time I am not sure if they aren’t following because they don’t understand or they don’t care, but they can both do simple things like get a ball, throw the ball, get your shoes (more Miles), lets go upstairs etc. Admittedly I haven’t been as good about practicing object identification – typically I label things more and see if I can get them to imitate it. We look through books and I point out pictures – I try asking them to point to things but they lose interest. We aren’t great at identifying body parts or clothes either. The only body part they know consistently is feet. Sometimes Abby will point to nose, even though I label them constantly. They do both known socks and shoes, so I guess that’s something.

Word lists – a few I’ve only heard once or twice. Miles, surprisingly, is more talkative and interested than Abby has been lately. Of course you don’t have to read these lists again – I’m keeping them up for my own records.

  • ball
  • cup (maybe)

They are both FINALLY moving up to the toddler room (from the creeper room) next week at daycare were they actually have quasi lesson plans and work on things like body parts, animal sounds etc so I’m hoping this extra exposure will help boost language skills over the next few months.

Life With Twins – 17 months

We’ve reached a point now where I am not exactly sure how to answer when people ask me how old they are. After some trial and error, I say “almost a year and a half.”

Already.

Gross Motor

Even though Abby didn’t even start walking until a month ago, she is already running like a champ. Miles plays around with walking backwards, which is pretty funny. Abby contemplates it, but that’s about as far as she goes. She walks on her tip toes sometimes, and watches herself.

When I thought about them walking, I thought the part that made me the most nervous was the running. I was wrong. It is the climbing. While neither has figured out quite how to climb on the couch yet, Abby is getting there, and they have both figured out how to climb onto the side table from the couch to reach half full glasses of water, iPhones, remotes, and my pop tarts (which they subsequently run off with, giggling).

Fine Motor

Not much new here. We get tons of I’ll hold the spoon in this hand and eat my applesauce with my other hand, because you know, that seems logical. Miles started pushing the toy cars around and Abby isn’t happy unless the book in front of her is a flip book of some kind that she can use two fingers to, well, flip. Bryan said he’s almost reaching the doorknobs, so we can’t be far from those super annoying child AND adult proof doorknob safety covers.

Speech and Language

Lots more imitating lately. As an example, Abby has said hug, hot, dun dun (imitating Bryan singing the Jaws theme). Miles has said ball and we go back and forth with this “ma!” “what?” “ma!” “what?” routine that cracks him up. Abby can pick out the dog, cat and heart puzzle pieces and will sometimes touch her nose after me. Miles runs away. Maybe he’s scared of my nose. They’ve started learning how to “comfort”. Sometimes I will pick Abby up and she will rub or pat my arm. Both will lean in for a kiss periodically, and come running for hugs often, which I certainly can’t complain about.

Other

We’ve finally moved out of (most) 12 month clothes. Miles is now wearing 18-24 months. Abby wears mostly 18, but can still fit in some 12. Miles has a couple canine teeth breaking through, along with 2.5 molars. Abby has all 4 molars and (finally) both lower lateral incisors. They sleep through the night more often than not, going to bed between 7:30-8 and waking up between 6-7.
